Leaking Radiator Drain Plug
'94 Jeep oem radiator. Wondering what to do with this plastic plug. l
changed the coolant a month ago and noticed it had a slow leak from the
plug. Stopped leaking it seemed, but l see the wet spot on DW so it still
has slow leak. l did not over wrench it (yet). l half-tried to
remove the plug when draining, but is not a one-piece plug and it seemed to
wanna hang-on and not come out. Fearing breakage, l replaced hoping for the
best. Is there something, like a gasket sealer which can be applied to a wet surface? l have used the black 'Window and Door' sealer, which can stick to wet surfaces but do not know if this is a good application. Any experience?
The first thing to try and the cheapest is to put in radiator
stop-leak..stop leak is pretty good.it can stop some pretty big leaks..
Drain ur radiator fluid into a bucket. Dry the threads on the
plug & the hole it fits into with a q-tip or two. Then brush on the gel
type pipe thread sealer on the threads of the plug & hole.
Tighten to a normal tightness & all should be well.
If not, then do what many have done, JB Weld (an engine epoxy avail at the
hardware store) the plug using the same process of draining & drying the hole threads, & when you need to drain the future, just pop off a radiator hose. In fact, alot of cars dont have a drain plug, pulling a hose is the standard method of draining. Also, make sure you wire brush off the area around the hole & if it looks to be any hairline cracks, JB weld those spots too after sanding with 100 grit or a coarse wire brush. Look for white mineral deposits, & wirebrush them looking for cracks under them, then apply JB weld over them. Good luck & have a good superbowl sunday.
Use teflon tape, you can find it in any hardware store in the
plumbing department, its cheap
You are going to have to take the plug completely out to use it, so put a
large drain basin below to catch all that nice new antifreeze you just put
in.
The plastic plug can be a royal pain. If you used the sealer,
and still have the leak, then it may be time to go ahead and find out the
cost of a replacement plug, look at it in the parts store, and then plan
an hour or so to drain the radiator, change the plug (perhaps using a
little teflon tape or other thread sealant that wont damage plastic) and
then secure and refill the radiator and run the vehicle to get the air out
and look for leaks again. Good luck.
drain the radiator, clean the area around the leaking plug.
purchase a packet of J.B. weld epoxy, mix and apply. allow it to
cure,re-fill radiator with anti-freeze and water, and walla.
